ABERGELE 15 - 0 NEWTOWN

On a day when Mother Nature tried to do her worst, Abergele produced their best performance and result of the season to date.

With a bleak record behind them, Gele looked to take the game to their mid Wales visitors from the moment referee Ceirion Parry blew his first whistle. The Gele pack were determined to make up for their recent disappointments and looked to take the game to their opposite eight from the off.

Newtown struggled to get out of their own half as the heavy conditions meant any relieving clearance kicks didn't carry too far up the pitch. Such was the vigour in the Gele ranks it was only a matter of time until the hosts first points of the afternoon were added. After a dart down the wing from prop Nathan Lea the forward platform was laid and after sustained pressure on the Newtown line, skipper Chris Meyers leapt over the ruck in front of him to claim the game's opening score. Rich Meddlicott added the conversion.

This inspired the team to increase the pressure but no further scores were added before the break, the only further chance was a penalty kick but unfortunately Rich Meddlicott's shot at goal drifted wide.

The second half started in a similar style to the first with Meddlicott redeeming his earlier miss by extending the Swordsmen's lead with a penalty kick. To a man the Gele team played for each other, Newtown had a good period in the third quarter hammering away at the Gele line but great tackling and a slippery ball meant they left empty handed.

The heavy conditions suited the hosts as the scrum and line out operated well denying Newtown of much needed possesion and once again Gele gained a strong foothold in the Newtown half of the pitch leading to the second try, following a number of darts by a number of players Rich Hillier picked up and  powered his way over the try line.

The platform for the victory was made by a great forward performance, buoyed by the return of Llion Mortimer following a two season lay off and some great tactical kicking from Man of the Match Rich Medlicott.

Newtown kept the hosts on their toes all afternoon and probably felt disappointed not to have any points to show for their efforts, the heavy conditions not favouring their speedy backs, Ceirion Parry did well to keep the game going under such heavy conditions and the home supporters were cheered by a workman like performance from their players.

Gele have a break from league fixtures untl 17th February when they entertain Shotton Steel at Pentre Mawr during which time they have a Cup fixture away at Flint.
