Friday Night Lights

Rhyl 24 - 17 Gele

Last Friday our U14s had the unique opportunity to play under floodlights for the first time in their short rugby careers.

Rhyl hosting the event started off strong in front of their large and enthusiastic crowd putting pressure on the young Gele lads from the get go. A big defence and some strong tackles from the likes of Will Hewitt and Isaac Kitchen kept Rhyl at bay, but eventually Rhyl scored with a tap and go penalty in the corner. Rhyl came back on the attack again, attacking out wide putting pressure on our wings that were covered well by Ethan Roberts, Ethan Jilge and Bailey Davies, the latter also doing a solid job as injury cover at 9 later in the game.

Again Rhyl broke through to make the score 12 – 0. This seemed to spur the gele lads on as they woke up and started to create some chances themselves. Aaron Clark carrying well and Bobby Barnaby smashing through defenders gave their team some territory with Brychan Hughes hitting ruck after ruck to secure the ball. Matty Allan putting pressure on their hooker gave us momentum to get the ball out quickly, Harvey Meyers spotting a gap, cleverly kicked the ball through for MOM Jack Moorley to collect a favourable bounce to score his first try of the evening and making the score 12-5 at half time.

The second half gele started on the front foot with the excellent Troy Fazackerley collecting nicely from the kick off to immediately attack the Rhyl defence. Aron Hedd Jones moving around the pitch doing the unnoticed dirty work of a flanker gave extra momentum before quick ball from scrum Half Hayden Meyers to his brother allowed a nice tip on for Moorely to get his second of the night under the posts. Harvey Meyers securing the conversion to level the score 12-12. With the momentum with gele, relative new comers Cassius Taylor, Louie Franklin and Ben Marshall showed composure to secure the wings and clearance kicks to allow gele to go on the attack again. Another attack from the strong gele pack again allowed quick ball with Hayden Meyers spotting the returning Bradley Longford in space who managed to pass to an open Bryn Edwards to use his gas to outpace Rhyl and score in the corner.

With the game at 12-17 to their credit Rhyl came back again with another big ball carry close to the line from a tap penalty to bring the score to 17-17. A bad injury to Kian Williams who was having a solid game in both attack and defence took a bit out of the gele defence and in the dying moments rhyl managed to overcome a solid but scrambled defence to secure the victory on a night where a draw would have been a pleasant result for these young lads first experience of Friday night lights but none the less a victory for the red boys of Rhyl and a chance for gele to regroup and prepare for fixtures ahead.
