U9's Match Report - 6th Oct 2019

Match report for Ruthin under 9s vs Abergele under 9’s. 6/10/2019 10.30Ko

2 games played against Ruthin both sides

This being Abergele's first under 9 contact game of the season all were going in very nervous, we got warmed up quickly and were ready to go and from the off Abergele attacked very strongly with support play from all players on the pitch, good defence from Ruthin in parts forcing a few mistakes Gele quickly regained the ball and got it to Caleb Meyers our Captain for the day who scored the first try. This is where our defence came in and we came out of the block fighting with a great forward defence not giving Ruthin the space to get the ball away. Ruthin getting the ball out but still Abergele defence moving with it turning the ball over allowing Edwin to go in for his first try. This battle went on into the second half with good defence from Jacob Hay amongst other players, allowing Edwin to score another two tries and the whole team defending like troopers finishing this game four tries to nil to Abergele. 20-minutes of some fantastic rugby played by u9s and Ruthin’s strong squad.

Gele going into the second game with massive amounts of confidence shown right the way through the game with some outstanding play from some individuals that came into their own as the game progressed. Firstly, Junior one of our very new recruits to the team chased down Ruthin on one of their breaks with a try saving tackle. Caleb continued with his attack defence being up in the face as soon as the pass was made, winning him the trophy of Braveheart for this week, also coming out of this game running three tries through with his great foot work and being where he needs to be. With this in mind Harris with his fantastic break, a little too close to line just running short of scoring a try that again from good positioning, fantastic support play by this player. Our big ball carrier Rhys broke through and also scored in the corner.  We did concede the one try, Ruthin breaking through and going out around our bunched defence. This did not stop Abergele regrouping and going again with some big tackles made by everybody on the pitch, which is the one thing I asked at the beginning of the game. We asked everybody to make a tackle and this happened in our last game. Tomos putting in one big hit, Harri, Lucy and Jac all put their hits in.  Leo had some great support play with some big lines and setting up some really great tries which Edwin took home.  Riley Stubbs had a great game with big hits and great game discipline being where he needed to be and getting his team where they needed to be. Our newest player Ryley had a great game as well, with some amazing tackles made. He is really settling in to the team well and has a lot to bring to us. I could not finish this match report off without mentioning Edwin’s amazing heads up rugby, he saw the opportunity for one of the best interceptions I have seen bursting through with great hands and running the full length of the pitch to score an amazing try winning him Player of Merit. finished up 6-1

Thank you to Ruthin for the invitation and being great hosts, thank you to the parents for their support throughout as well. I am one happy coach and it has been an amazing day. On last thing to say is it is great to be approached by the two coaches from the other team who said how good our defence was, and that we were the best drilled team they have played so far. Each and every one of them were outstanding.

Team List: Caleb Meyers, Riley Stubbs, Leo Clegg, Jac Evans, Rhys Skelland, Edwin Knowlson Roberts, Junior Mercer, Jacob Hay, Tomos Griffiths, Lucy Davies, Ryley Hinckley, Harris Cooke, Harri Williams Hoare
